Juanita Morris Kreps (Jan. 11, 1921 - )

   Educator, economist and U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Juanita Kreps has earned a worldwide reputation for her insight. She was the first economist and the first woman to head the Commerce Department.		     




   
 Junior Achievement		    Born in Lynch, Kentucky, in 1921, she earned her Bachelor's degree at Berea College and then began her long association with North Carolina — earning her master's and doctorate at Duke University.
   In 1944, she married Clifton H. Kreps, Jr., also an economist. They have three children.
   She taught economics at Dennison University, Hofstra University, Queens College and then at Duke University in 1958. In 1973, she was appointed vice president of the university.
   In 1972, Kreps became the first woman on the board of directors of the New York Stock Exchange.
   In 1976, President Jimmy Carter asked Juanita Kreps to serve as Secretary of Commerce. She held the position from 1977 to 1979.
   She rejoined the Duke faculty in 1979 as a professor of economics and vice president.
   She has written numerous books including Lifetime Allocation of Work and Income: Essays in the Economics of Aging (1971), Sex in the Marketplace: American Women at Work (1971), and Women and the American Economy (1976).
   New York Stock Exchange, Eastman Kodak, R. J. Reynolds Indsutries and J. C. Penney are just a few of the many corporation boards on which she served.
